The True Post — An RCMP police detachment in the small town of Morse, Saskatchewan, has been completely destroyed by a devastating fire that spread rapidly through the building, while the unexpected failure of a fire hydrant made efforts to control the blaze significantly more difficult.
Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no officers or civilians were inside the building when the fire broke out, and no injuries have been reported.
Fire Engulfs RCMP Detachment
The fire erupted on Sunday evening, quickly consuming the RCMP detachment before firefighters could bring the situation under control.
Despite an extensive emergency response, the intensity of the flames prevented crews from saving the building.
Residents watched helplessly as one of the community’s most important public buildings was reduced to rubble.
Hydrant Failure Hampered Firefighting Efforts
Emergency crews encountered an additional challenge when a fire hydrant unexpectedly failed during firefighting operations.
With the local water supply disrupted, firefighters relied on nearby farmers and Hutterite communities to provide additional water, allowing crews to continue battling the blaze.
Morse Mayor Rocky Penner said two other hydrants in town were already awaiting repairs, while the failed hydrant had recently passed inspection and was believed to be fully operational.
Municipal officials have now added it to the list of infrastructure requiring immediate attention.
Community Left in Shock
The town of Morse, home to approximately 210 residents, has been left shaken by the incident.
Mayor Penner described the destruction of the RCMP detachment as a significant loss for the entire community.
Residents also voiced concerns about the reliability of the town’s firefighting infrastructure, warning that similar equipment failures during future emergencies could have even more serious consequences.
Local resident Lyle Patenaude said the community should conduct a comprehensive review of its water and fire protection systems to improve emergency preparedness.
No Disruption to Police Services
The RCMP confirmed that no personnel were inside the detachment when the fire began.
Following the blaze, officers worked to recover important government records and official documents from the damaged site wherever possible.
Authorities emphasized that police services in the region will continue without interruption, as contingency plans are already in place.
Nearby RCMP detachments will temporarily provide policing services while replacement arrangements are made.
Investigation Underway
Investigators from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
According to the RCMP, there is currently no indication that the fire was suspicious, although investigators are continuing to examine the scene before reaching a final conclusion.
Community Support Praised
During the emergency response, local farmers and nearby Hutterite communities supplied water and additional resources to assist firefighters.
Mayor Rocky Penner praised their efforts, saying the willingness of neighbors to help during a crisis demonstrated the strength and resilience of the community.
Rebuilding a Priority
Local officials hope a new RCMP detachment can be constructed as soon as possible, stressing that a permanent police presence is essential for maintaining public safety in rural Saskatchewan.
As investigators continue examining the cause of the fire, municipal leaders are also prioritizing repairs to damaged hydrants and improvements to emergency infrastructure to better prepare the town for future incidents.
