The True Post (Web News) — Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk is set to embark on a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) next month, where he will participate in scientific research, station maintenance, and medical experiments aimed at improving human health.
The mission is being hailed as an important milestone for both Canada and the global space community, with research that could contribute to future treatments for heart disease, bone loss, and other health conditions.
Childhood Dream Becomes Reality
The 44-year-old astronaut is from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, where he grew up on a cattle farm.
Kutryk said he had dreamed of traveling to space since childhood but never imagined it would become reality. He described representing Canada on an international space mission as the greatest honor of his life.
Part of NASA and SpaceX Crew-13
Kutryk will fly as a member of NASA and SpaceX’s Crew-13 mission, alongside NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Tetyatnikov.
Jessica Watkins previously served aboard the International Space Station and will be making another long-duration mission.
Launch Scheduled for September 12
The Crew-13 mission is scheduled to launch on September 12 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a SpaceX spacecraft.
The four-member crew is expected to spend approximately six months aboard the ISS, carrying out scientific experiments and operational responsibilities.
Medical Research in Microgravity
One of the mission’s primary objectives is to study how the human body responds to the microgravity environment of space.
Kutryk explained that the low-gravity conditions accelerate changes associated with aging, allowing scientists to study health issues in a much shorter time than would be possible on Earth.
Research Focus
Canadian-led experiments will examine the effects of spaceflight on:
- Heart health
- Bone density loss
- Blood circulation
- Human aging in microgravity
Researchers hope the findings will help develop improved treatments for millions of patients on Earth suffering from cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and other age-related conditions.
Kutryk said his own body will effectively serve as a research subject throughout the mission, helping scientists better understand these medical challenges.
Canada’s Growing Role in Space Research
Officials from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) say Canada has become a global leader in space-based health research and continues to make significant contributions to international space exploration.
The mission also highlights Canada’s long-standing partnership with NASA and other international space agencies.
Operating Canada’s Robotic Technology
During his stay aboard the ISS, Kutryk will help operate and maintain Canada’s robotic systems, including the station’s advanced robotic arm.
His background in robotics makes him well suited for operating and servicing the sophisticated Canadian-built equipment.
A Historic Mission
Joshua Kutryk will become Canada’s fourth astronaut to complete a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station.
With NASA planning to retire the ISS around 2030, experts believe Kutryk could be among the last Canadian astronauts to spend an extended period aboard the orbiting laboratory.
