The United Kingdom has approved a new once-daily pill for the treatment of obesity and Type 2 diabetes, making it the first country in Europe to authorize the new oral medicine for use.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved orforglipron, a medicine developed by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug is expected to be marketed under the brand name Foundayo.
New GLP-1 Drug Comes in Pill Form
Orforglipron belongs to a class of medicines known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines work through hormonal pathways involved in regulating blood sugar, slowing the movement of food through the digestive system and reducing appetite.
Because of this mechanism, the medicine can help support weight loss. However, it is intended to be used alongside a balanced, reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The approval gives patients another option in a rapidly expanding field of obesity and diabetes treatments, particularly for people who prefer taking medication by mouth rather than receiving injections.
Who Can Use the New Medicine?
Under the regulatory approval, the medicine can be used by people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
People with a BMI between 27 and 30 may also qualify if they have at least one health condition associated with excess weight.
This means the medicine is not simply intended for people seeking to lose weight. It may also be prescribed to patients whose excess weight is contributing to other health problems.
Approved for Type 2 Diabetes
Orforglipron has also been approved for certain adults with Type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar levels remain inadequately controlled despite existing treatment.
GLP-1 medicines have already become an important part of treatment for obesity and Type 2 diabetes. However, the availability of an oral version could make the treatment particularly attractive to patients who would rather avoid injections.
Once-Daily Treatment
One of the most notable features of orforglipron is its relatively simple dosing schedule.
The medicine is taken once a day and can be taken at any time of the day. According to the information surrounding the approval, patients do not need to follow a specific meal schedule or special water requirements when taking the tablet.
This could make the treatment easier to incorporate into everyday routines compared with some existing therapies.
Potential Alternative to Injectable GLP-1 Drugs
The growing popularity of GLP-1 medicines has increased demand for effective treatments that do not require injections.
A once-daily oral medicine could offer an alternative for people who are uncomfortable with injectable treatments or prefer tablets as part of their weight-management or diabetes-care routine.
However, patients should only use the medicine under appropriate medical supervision. A healthcare professional can determine whether the treatment is suitable based on an individual’s medical history, existing conditions and other medicines.
A New Development in Obesity Treatment
The UK’s approval of orforglipron marks another significant development in the treatment of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
The decision could also increase attention on oral GLP-1 treatments as pharmaceutical companies continue developing alternatives to injectable medicines.
Further regulatory decisions in other European countries could determine how widely the new treatment becomes available across the region.
For patients, the emergence of a once-daily GLP-1 pill could provide another option in managing weight and Type 2 diabetes, although its suitability and effectiveness will depend on each patient’s individual medical circumstances.
