Experimental Weight-Loss Drugs Show Promising Results in New Research

Two experimental weight-loss drugs have produced encouraging results in recent research, raising hopes that a new generation of obesity treatments could eventually offer greater weight reduction than some currently available medicines.

The drugs, retatrutide and amycretin, are still under clinical development and are not yet approved as routine treatments for weight loss.

Research has shown substantial reductions in body weight among people receiving the experimental injections. The new research has also drawn attention because of comparisons with tirzepatide, the active ingredient in medicines such as Mounjaro.

A recent analysis reported that tirzepatide produced approximately 19% weight loss over about 17 months, while retatrutide was associated with around 22.1% weight loss over approximately 48 weeks in the data being compared. (The Independent)

However, these figures should not be interpreted as a direct head-to-head comparison.

The drugs were not necessarily tested under identical conditions, and differences in study design, treatment duration, dosage and patient characteristics can affect the results.

Retatrutide Is Still Experimental

Despite its promising results, retatrutide has not yet become an approved routine treatment for obesity.

Amycretin Also Produces Encouraging Results

A Phase 1b/2a clinical study examined once-weekly injectable amycretin in adults with overweight or obesity.

How Amycretin Works

Amycretin is a newer type of obesity medicine designed to act on both the GLP-1 and amylin receptor pathways.

Novo Nordisk, which is developing the drug, has been studying amycretin as a potential treatment for people with overweight or obesity.

In its Phase 1b/2a trial, the company reported estimated weight reductions of 9.7% at 20 weeks with a 1.25mg dose, 16.2% at 28 weeks with a 5mg dose and 22.0% at 36 weeks with a 20mg dose. (Novo Nordisk)

The findings have increased interest in whether medicines targeting multiple biological pathways could provide greater weight reduction than existing treatments.

Comparison With Semaglutide

The new experimental treatments have also been compared with medicines based on semaglutide, including Wegovy and Ozempic.

Recent analyses have reported that semaglutide-based injections can produce substantial weight loss, although the estimated reduction is generally lower than the highest figures reported for retatrutide and amycretin in their respective trials. (DOI)
