Researchers say the medications may not only reduce appetite and body weight but could also help decrease cravings for alcohol and certain other addictive substances.
These medications belong to a class known as GLP-1 agonists. They were initially developed to treat Type 2 diabetes and later became widely used in the treatment of obesity because of their weight-loss effects.
How Do GLP-1 Medications Work?
GLP-1 medications mimic the effects of a naturally occurring hormone in the body. They help regulate insulin release and slow digestion, which can make people feel full for longer periods.
As a result, many people taking these medications experience reduced appetite and weight loss.
Scientists are now also investigating how these medications may affect the brain.
Possible Effects on the Brain’s Reward System
Research suggests that GLP-1 medications may affect more than the systems responsible for controlling hunger.
They may also influence areas of the brain involved in creating cravings for foods and substances that people find pleasurable.
When a person thinks about something they enjoy, certain chemical processes in the brain can encourage them to seek out and consume it. If this reward system becomes excessively active, it may contribute to obesity, problematic alcohol use and other forms of addiction.
Reduced Alcohol Cravings
Early research has produced evidence suggesting that some people taking GLP-1 medications may consume less alcohol.

Research Into Other Addictive Substances
