Iran has welcomed diplomatic efforts aimed at ending ongoing tensions in the region while making clear that Tehran will continue to defend its national sovereignty and the inalienable rights of its people.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran was prepared to pursue a diplomatic and negotiated path to restore peace and stability in the region, but would not compromise on its core national interests or sovereignty.
Key Meeting in Beijing
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to Beijing as part of ongoing diplomatic contacts, where he held talks with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.
The meeting covered the overall regional situation, rising tensions and possible diplomatic solutions, along with several other important issues.
During the meeting, Araghchi said Iran considered diplomatic channels important for restoring peace and security in the region. Tehran, he said, was seeking to prevent the current situation from deteriorating further and wanted to work with neighbouring countries through dialogue to support regional stability.
Talks With Neighbouring Countries
According to the Iranian foreign minister, Tehran has begun discussions with neighbouring countries as part of efforts to restore regional peace and security.
Iran’s position is that regional disputes should be addressed through communication, negotiations and diplomatic efforts.
Araghchi said Iran wanted to promote friendly and peaceful relations with its neighbours. He stressed that lasting regional peace requires countries to understand one another’s concerns and take practical steps to reduce tensions.
Iran Vows to Defend National Sovereignty
The Iranian foreign minister made clear that supporting a diplomatic solution does not mean Iran is prepared to abandon its national sovereignty or fundamental rights.
He said protecting the inalienable rights of the Iranian people remains one of Tehran’s fundamental priorities.
Araghchi said Iran remained committed to pursuing peace and negotiations while simultaneously protecting its national interests. According to him, restoring regional peace and safeguarding national sovereignty are not conflicting objectives and can both be pursued through diplomatic means.
China Calls for De-escalation
During the meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also urged the United States and Iran to avoid further escalation and return to the negotiating table.
China made clear that preventing the current dispute from spreading further would be in the interest of the region.
Wang Yi said China did not want the existing tensions to intensify or their consequences to spread to other parts of the region, including Yemen and the Red Sea. He warned that an expansion of the conflict could make the situation even more complicated.
Call for Resumption of Negotiations
The Chinese foreign minister also called on the United States and Iran to hold meaningful negotiations on outstanding issues.
He said both sides should seek to reactivate the diplomatic process despite their differences.
Wang Yi also stressed the need to restore a negotiating framework based on the consensus reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He said diplomacy could provide a more effective means of containing tensions and resolving differences.
Conflict Serves No One’s Interests
Wang Yi said the ongoing dispute between Washington and Tehran was not in the interests of either side.
According to the Chinese foreign minister, continued tensions could pose risks not only to the two countries but also to peace and stability across the wider region.
Iran’s support for a diplomatic solution and its decision to begin talks with neighbouring countries indicate that Tehran wants to advance regional efforts aimed at reducing tensions.
At the same time, Iranian leaders have maintained that diplomatic efforts must continue alongside the protection of national sovereignty and the fundamental rights of the Iranian people.
Diplomatic Activity Intensifies
Araghchi’s visit to China comes at a time of international concern over the regional situation.
China has once again emphasised dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of addressing tensions, while Iran has indicated that it is intensifying direct contacts with neighbouring countries to promote peace and stability.
The meeting between Tehran and Beijing highlighted the need to prevent the conflict from spreading further, restore diplomatic channels and continue efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.
