The man, identified as Sean Ward of Quinte West, allegedly opened fire on a police officer stationed outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue on Sunday evening. Ward was wounded during the exchange of gunfire and later died in hospital.

Reports Point to Antisemitic Views

Global News, citing military sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, reported that Ward had expressed conspiracy theories about COVID-19 while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. One source said some of those conspiratorial statements were antisemitic and blamed Jewish people for the pandemic.
The report also said Ward had been a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and was released from the military in June 2022. The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that a Sean Ward matching the suspect’s description served from July 2017 until June 2022 and left the service at the rank of corporal. He did not deploy overseas. Alleged Anger Towards Immigrants
Accounts attributed to people who knew Ward have also raised questions about his views towards immigrants and his personal circumstances before the shooting.
According to the information provided in the investigation, Ward had expressed frustration about unemployment and had blamed immigrants for difficulties in finding work.

Shooting Outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue
The shooting occurred at approximately 7:10 p.m. on September 20, near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville.
A Belleville police officer, Const. Jeff Smith, had been stationed outside the synagogue as worshippers gathered for Yom Kippur. According to the Ontario Special Investigations Unit, Ward was armed with a shotgun and allegedly opened fire on Smith.

Police Officer Remains Hospitalised
Const. Jeff Smith, a 13-year veteran of the Belleville Police Service, sustained serious gunshot injuries.
He was initially reported to be in critical condition but was later described as critical but stable. His recovery is expected to involve a lengthy period of treatment.
