India Fined 20 Percent and West Indies 10 Percent for Slow Over Rate

Date: October 6, 2026 The True Post (Web News) —The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed fines on both India and the West Indies for slow over rates during the third and final ODI between the two teams.

India faced a higher penalty than the West Indies because the Indian team fell further behind the required over rate and failed to complete the required number of overs within the allotted time.

According to the ICC, in the match played in New Chandigarh, after accounting for the time allowances, India was four overs behind the required rate, while the West Indies were two overs behind.

As a result of the violation, the Indian team was fined 20 percent of the applicable match fees for its players and support staff, while the West Indies will pay a fine of 10 percent of their match fees.

Both Teams Found Guilty of Slow Over Rates

Both teams failed to complete their overs within the allotted time during the third ODI. Under ICC regulations, teams are required to maintain the required over rate and complete their overs within the designated time. Failure to do so can result in fines and other penalties.

The over rate was affected by various factors during the match. However, even after taking the available time allowances into account, both teams failed to maintain the required over rate.

India fell four overs behind, resulting in a fine twice as high as that imposed on the West Indies. The West Indies were two overs behind and were therefore fined 10 percent.

Captains Accept Penalties

ICC International Panel of Match Referees member Prakash Bhatt imposed the fines on both teams.

According to the ICC, the captains of India and the West Indies admitted their respective teams’ slow over-rate violations and accepted the proposed sanctions.

As the captains accepted both the charges and penalties, there was no need for further hearings. The fines imposed by the ICC therefore came into effect immediately.

India Had Already Won the Series

India had already secured the three-match ODI series before facing the slow-over-rate penalty. India won the first two matches to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

The West Indies then made a remarkable comeback in the third ODI, not only winning the match but also reaching a major milestone in their ODI history.

The West Indies successfully chased India’s target of 352 runs, creating a new record. It was described as the highest successful run chase by the West Indies in ODI cricket.

Shai Hope’s Outstanding Innings

West Indies captain Shai Hope played a central role in the historic victory. Despite the pressure, he produced an outstanding batting performance, scoring an unbeaten 162 runs.

Hope’s big innings put the West Indies in a strong position while chasing the difficult target, and the visiting side eventually succeeded in reaching the 352-run target.

During his innings, Shai Hope displayed an excellent combination of patience and aggression and guided his team to a memorable victory in the final match of the three-game series.

West Indies Make a Comeback in the Final Match

Although India had won the first two matches and secured the series, the final ODI victory was extremely important for the West Indies.

India had already secured overall dominance in the series, but the West Indies’ successful chase of 352 in the final match demonstrated their ability to pursue a large target.

The victory also gave the West Indies confidence ahead of the upcoming five-match T20 series. India, meanwhile, will focus on its strategy in the shorter format following the defeat in the final ODI.

T20 Series Stage

Following the completion of the ODI series, the two teams will now face each other in the shortest format of the game. The five-match T20 series between India and the West Indies will begin on October 6.

The T20 series will present a different challenge for both teams, with fast-paced batting, power hitting, death-over bowling and fielding performances expected to play important roles in determining the results of the matches.
