Children in the US Face Risk From Polio-Like Illness as Respiratory Virus Spreads

Date: October 8, 2026 The True Post (Web News) —An increase in the spread of a respiratory virus has been recorded in California, where it can, in very rare cases, cause a polio-like neurological illness in children.

According to experts, Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is generally more active towards the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. However, its spread has raised concerns about children’s health, prompting calls for greater vigilance.

Virus Spread

An increase in signs of EV-D68 has been detected in various parts of California’s Bay Area. The presence of the virus is being monitored in wastewater in several locations, including Palo Alto, Napa, southeastern San Francisco and San Rafael.

Experts say wastewater monitoring can help provide an early indication of trends in the spread of a virus. This approach also provides additional information about the presence of viruses within a population.

Common Symptoms

EV-D68 is a respiratory virus belonging to the broader group of non-polio enteroviruses. People infected with the virus may generally develop symptoms similar to those of the common cold.

Coughing, difficulty breathing and wheezing are among its prominent symptoms. Some children may also develop a fever, while breathing difficulties can become more severe in certain cases.

Children at Risk

According to medical experts, infants, young children and teenagers may be at greater risk of developing more severe illness from the virus. Children who have not previously been exposed to it may be particularly vulnerable because they may lack existing immunity, increasing the risk of a more severe infection.

However, not every child infected with EV-D68 develops a serious illness. In most cases, symptoms may resemble those of common respiratory infections, while severe complications are relatively uncommon.

A Polio-Like Illness

The greatest concern surrounding EV-D68 stems from its association with a neurological condition in extremely rare cases. The virus has been linked in some instances to a condition known as acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).

AFM is an uncommon but serious illness that primarily affects children. When the nervous system is affected, it can cause sudden weakness in certain parts of the body or difficulty moving the affected limbs.

Watch for Symptoms

Experts say symptoms of AFM do not necessarily appear immediately after symptoms of EV-D68 or another viral infection develop. They may emerge several weeks later.

Parents are advised to seek medical attention immediately if their child develops sudden weakness in an arm or leg, difficulty moving a part of the body, or other unusual neurological symptoms following a respiratory illness.

Seasonal Pattern

EV-D68 is generally considered a virus that spreads more actively towards the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Because of this seasonal pattern, paying close attention to symptoms in children with respiratory illnesses during this period is considered important.

Experts say monitoring the virus can help public health authorities understand the situation and plan precautionary measures, particularly in areas that may face a higher risk.

Precautions Are Essential

Parents should not ignore symptoms of respiratory illness in children, particularly if a child has difficulty breathing or their symptoms worsen rapidly.

Hand hygiene, avoiding unnecessary close contact with sick people and taking appropriate precautions when illness occurs may help reduce the spread of the virus.

Medical experts stress that although EV-D68 has been linked to AFM, the neurological condition remains rare. The spread of EV-D68 should therefore not be interpreted as equivalent to a polio outbreak. Nevertheless, unusual neurological symptoms in children require prompt medical attention.

Monitoring Continues

In California, information is being collected through various methods, including wastewater monitoring, to track the presence of the virus. Such surveillance is important for public health experts because it can help them understand patterns of transmission and inform the public in a timely manner.

Under the current circumstances, parents are being urged to monitor their children’s health and seek medical advice if unusual symptoms develop alongside a respiratory illness.

According to experts, timely diagnosis and appropriate medical care can play an important role in reducing the risk of complications.
