Michigan Senate Race: Republican Mike Rogers Urges Trump to End Trade War with Canada

Date: October 8, 2026 The True Post (Web News) —Republican candidate Mike Rogers has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to end the ongoing trade war with Canada as a closely contested race continues for Michigan’s vacant Senate seat.

Mike Rogers has released a new 30-second campaign advertisement criticizing U.S. tariffs on goods imported from Canada. Interestingly, the video shows Rogers sitting in a sports bar with a bottle of Canadian Labatt beer. Labatt is a well-known Canadian brand and is popular in Michigan and other U.S. border states.

Canada Is Not the Enemy

In the advertisement, Mike Rogers says the people of Michigan understand that Canada is not an enemy of the United States and that the ongoing tariff dispute between the two countries should therefore come to an end.

The video also features an image of the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Canada. The bridge is considered an important route for trade and travel between the two countries.

Rogers said that if elected to the U.S. Senate from Michigan, he would work across party lines to bring prices down. According to him, lowering costs for the public would be his first priority.

Trump Responds

U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Rogers’ advertisement while speaking to reporters at the White House. Trump said he understood the message to mean that Rogers wanted Canada to reach an agreement with the United States.

Maintaining his hard-line position on Canadian trade policy, Trump said the United States would no longer tolerate the situation. He claimed that Canada had benefited economically at America’s expense for many years and that this would no longer be allowed to continue.

Previous Position Was Different

Mike Rogers’ current position on trade policy with Canada differs from his earlier statements.

In an interview with Fox News during the summer of this year, Rogers supported the tariffs imposed by President Trump on Canadian products. At the time, he described Trump’s trade policy as extremely important for revitalizing industrial activity in the United States.

Rogers had said that Canada wanted to sell millions of vehicles in Michigan and that this situation should not be considered acceptable because such imports could affect American workers and businesses involved in manufacturing vehicles and auto parts.

He also described Canada at the time as not being a good trading partner for the United States.

Close Relationship with Trump

Mike Rogers has long been regarded as one of Donald Trump’s close political allies.

Earlier this year, after Trump announced his support for Rogers in the Senate race, the Republican candidate said he was very pleased to have the president’s backing.

On that occasion, Rogers said he and President Trump would work together to bring a major economic revival to Michigan.

Public Opinion on Tariffs

Rogers’ new position on Trump’s Canada policy comes at a time when various public opinion surveys suggest that a significant number of Americans do not agree with the tariff policy.

According to a recent poll cited in the report, only 26 percent of Americans considered the imposition of tariffs on Canadian products to be the right decision.

Democratic Candidate Criticizes Rogers

Rogers’ Democratic rival, Abdul El-Sayed, also criticized the new advertisement.

In a social media post, El-Sayed said Rogers had supported the trade war from the beginning and was now changing his position because the electoral situation had changed.

Industries Are Closely Integrated

The automotive industries of the United States and Canada have been deeply interconnected for decades.

Canada supplies important vehicle components to American factories, while many parts cross the border between the two countries multiple times during the manufacturing process.

Because of this industrial integration, the automotive sectors of Canada and the United States depend significantly on one another. Trade restrictions and tariffs can therefore affect industries and consumers on both sides of the border.
