The True Post — Canada’s women’s artistic gymnastics team delivered an impressive performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, earning the silver medal in the team competition after finishing just 1.1 points behind Australia.
Team Canada scored 157.300 points in the women’s team final, narrowly missing the gold medal, which went to Australia with 158.400 points. England secured the bronze medal after finishing with 154.400 points.
Canada Falls Just Short of Gold
The closely contested final saw Canada remain in medal contention throughout the competition before ultimately finishing second.

Ellie Black Leads Team Canada

She topped the all-around qualification standings with a score of 53.400, placing herself among the favorites for the individual all-around title.
Black also qualified for the uneven bars final, finishing second in qualifying with 13.850 points.
Lia Monica Fontaine Shines on Vault
Canadian gymnast Lia Monica Fontaine impressed in the vault qualification, earning 13.750 points to finish first.
Fontaine, who claimed the vault silver medal at the 2025 World Championships, continued her excellent form by also qualifying for the all-around final alongside Ellie Black.
Canadians Advance to Multiple Event Finals
Canada will have strong representation in several individual finals.
On the balance beam, both:
- Ellie Black (5th)
- Lia Monica Fontaine (6th)
qualified for the final.
Fontaine also secured a place in the floor exercise final, where she will compete alongside teammate Lia Reddick.
Oliver Dawson Misses Swimming Medal by 0.05 Seconds
In swimming, Canadian athlete Oliver Dawson came heartbreakingly close to a medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke final.
He finished fourth with a time of 59.70 seconds, only 0.05 seconds behind England’s Adam Ramsey Peaty, who earned the bronze medal in 59.65 seconds.
Australia’s Sam Williamson won gold in 59.17 seconds, while Philip Nowacki of Jersey claimed silver with 59.34 seconds.
Sophie Angus Advances to Final
Canadian swimmer Sophie Angus qualified for the women’s 100m breaststroke final after finishing second in her semifinal heat with a time of 1:06.74.
Her performance secured a place among the event’s finalists as Canada continued to contend for medals across multiple sports.
Ellie Black Overcomes Finger Injury
During one of her routines, Ellie Black appeared to suffer discomfort in one of her fingers.
Despite the injury concern, she completed her performance and played a vital role in helping Canada secure the silver medal, demonstrating the resilience and leadership that have made her one of Canada’s most accomplished gymnasts.
With several Canadian athletes advancing to individual finals, Team Canada will now look to add more medals as competition continues at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
