The True Post (Web News)Four Canadian citizens who were previously quarantined aboard a cruise ship due to a deadly hantavirus outbreak returned to Canada on Sunday and will continue to remain in isolation under strict medical supervision.
British Columbia’s Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed that the individuals will be quarantined within the province, as they have personal connections there. She added that although the journey had been stressful for all passengers involved, the return home now allows them to receive proper monitoring and care.
The four Canadians were among approximately 130 passengers aboard the cruise ship, which had docked earlier in Tenerife, Spain. Before disembarkation, all passengers underwent medical screening, and none showed any symptoms of hantavirus infection.
The Public Health Agency of Canada and Global Affairs Canada arranged a chartered flight to bring the individuals back, with strict health and safety protocols followed throughout the journey, including continuous monitoring by a quarantine officer.
According to Dr. Henry, the passengers had already been following strict isolation measures since early May while on board the vessel. Upon arrival in British Columbia, they were transferred to pre-arranged accommodation where daily health monitoring will continue.
Health authorities stated that the individuals will remain in quarantine for an initial period of 21 days, which may be extended up to 42 days depending on medical assessment and incubation considerations.
Officials reassured the public that there is no risk of community transmission, as the individuals are being kept in complete isolation and will have no contact with the public.
Dr. Bonnie Henry also emphasized that while public concern is understandable, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic experience, hantavirus behaves differently from respiratory viruses and does not spread in the same manner.
Authorities said all necessary precautions are in place, and the situation is being closely monitored to ensure public safety while providing full medical support to those in isolation.
