Date: October 1, 2026 The True Post (Web News) —The Alberta government has extended the application deadline for its $100 fuel rebate programme by one month. Eligible residents can now submit their applications online until October 31. The rebate was announced in June this year to provide financial relief to residents facing the growing burden of fuel prices.
Millions of Residents Eligible
According to the provincial government, approximately 3.4 million adults in Alberta are eligible for the rebate. However, only around 1.5 million people have submitted applications so far.
Provincial Finance Minister Jason Nixon said the government had decided to extend the application period to ensure that as many eligible residents as possible could benefit from the programme.
Fuel Tax Suspension
Meanwhile, the Alberta government is suspending the provincial fuel tax for three months, beginning Thursday. The measure is intended to reduce gasoline and diesel prices and provide residents with relief from rising costs at the pump.
13 Cents per Litre in Fuel Tax
Four months ago, Premier Danielle Smith defended the $100 rebate programme, explaining that the government was concerned that reductions in fuel taxes might not always be fully passed on to consumers. For this reason, the government decided to provide direct payments to eligible residents instead.
However, last week, Smith acknowledged that Alberta residents were not satisfied with the rebate programme. According to her, the government is now changing its policy by reducing the provincial tax of 13 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel, with the reduction remaining in effect until the end of the year.
Policy Shift
The government’s decision to combine the rebate programme with a temporary suspension of the fuel tax is being presented as an effort to provide immediate financial relief to Alberta residents.
On the one hand, eligible individuals have been given additional time to apply for the $100 rebate. On the other, the government is attempting to directly influence gasoline and diesel prices by suspending the fuel tax for three months.
Government Adopts a New Approach
The Alberta government has therefore adjusted its strategy to address inflation and rising fuel costs. Initially, the government prioritised direct $100 rebate payments. However, following public feedback, it has decided to return to fuel tax reductions as another way to provide relief.
Residents now have until October 31 to apply for the rebate, while the temporary suspension of the fuel tax is scheduled to begin on Thursday.
