Mayoral candidate Dipika Damerla has called for the appointment of an independent auditor general, while other candidates have also outlined their positions on the issue.
Call for an Independent Auditor General
Dipika Damerla says Mississauga has needed an independent auditor general for a long time. According to Damerla, several major cities in Ontario already have independent auditor general offices, which can independently examine municipal spending, administrative decisions and complaints.
Speaking during her election campaign on Monday, Damerla argued that having city employees investigate complaints involving the municipality could create potential conflicts of interest within the oversight system.
She maintains that an independent office would help ensure that concerns involving city projects, expenditures and administrative decisions can be investigated without being influenced by the municipal administration.
Previous Council Decision
The issue has gained renewed attention because nearly all members of Mississauga City Council voted against appointing an independent auditor general in March this year. At the time, all councillors except Damerla rejected the proposal to establish the position.
Instead, the council decided to strengthen the city’s existing audit department and introduce a fraud hotline for residents.
The earlier decision has now become part of the mayoral campaign debate, with candidates discussing both the proposed oversight role and their previous positions on the matter.
Damerla Makes Accountability a Campaign Issue
Damerla is making the appointment of an independent auditor general a central issue in her campaign. She argues that independent oversight is necessary to improve transparency and accountability in the city’s financial affairs.
According to Damerla, residents should have confidence that questions concerning municipal projects, spending or administrative decisions can be investigated by an office independent of the city’s administrative structure.
Her position centres on providing residents with an additional mechanism to raise concerns and seek independent scrutiny of municipal operations.
Tedjo’s Campaign Responds
The campaign of mayoral candidate Alvin Tedjo has also responded to Damerla’s call.
Tedjo’s campaign says he has long supported establishing an independent auditor general in Mississauga.
However, the campaign has questioned Damerla’s current position, pointing out that she previously voted against a proposal to study the issue of creating the position.
As a result, the debate is not limited to whether Mississauga should appoint an independent auditor general. Candidates’ previous voting records have also become part of the political discussion.
Bonnie Crombie Supports the Proposal
Mayoral candidate Bonnie Crombie has also expressed support for an independent auditor general in Mississauga.
Crombie considers the proposed position a necessary mechanism for overseeing municipal spending. Her support reflects the growing prominence of financial oversight, budget transparency and scrutiny of administrative decisions in the mayoral campaign.
Current Mayor Takes a Different Approach
Mississauga’s current mayor, Carolyn Parrish, has advocated strengthening the existing oversight system rather than establishing an independent auditor general.
Parrish says City Council has already introduced improvements to the city’s oversight arrangements. These measures include hiring additional auditors, providing residents with access to a fraud hotline and involving community representatives in the audit committee.
She argues that these steps have given residents a greater role in monitoring municipal finances and administrative matters.
Her position differs from that of candidates who are calling for a separate, independent auditor general’s office.
Transparency and Accountability in the Election Campaign
As Mississauga’s mayoral election approaches, questions about financial management, accountability and transparency are becoming increasingly prominent.
At the centre of the debate is how independently municipal spending and administrative decisions should be reviewed.
Damerla and Crombie support an independent auditor general, while Parrish has emphasised improving the existing audit and oversight mechanisms. Tedjo’s campaign also says he supports an independent auditor general, although it has raised questions about Damerla’s previous vote on studying the proposal.
