A frightening fire broke out in the attached garage of a home in Manotick, Ottawa, on Tuesday afternoon, engulfing a two-car garage before spreading into the interior of the house. Ottawa Fire Services responded quickly and brought the blaze under control. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Fire Reported in Manotick
Ottawa Fire Services received multiple emergency calls shortly after 1:15 p.m. Tuesday. Callers reported seeing heavy black smoke and visible flames coming from a home in the 400 block of Lockmaster Crescent in Manotick.
Firefighters Arrive Within Minutes
Firefighters arrived at the scene approximately four minutes after receiving the emergency calls. Upon arrival, crews confirmed that the fire had fully developed inside the home’s attached two-car garage.
The situation quickly became more serious as flames spread beyond the garage and into parts of the house.
Fire Spreads Into Home
According to fire officials, the blaze was not confined to the garage. Flames and heat reached the interior of the residence, prompting firefighters to immediately begin efforts to contain the fire and protect the remaining structure.
The spread of the fire made the operation more challenging for crews working inside the building.
Heavy Smoke Creates Zero Visibility
Ottawa Fire Services said smoke conditions inside the home were extremely severe, leaving firefighters with virtually no visibility.
Officials described the conditions as “zero visibility,” making both the search for occupants and firefighting operations particularly difficult.
Firefighters had to work carefully while navigating the heavily smoke-filled interior.
Home Searched Twice
Crews conducted two complete searches of the residence to determine whether anyone was inside at the time of the fire.
Following both searches, firefighters confirmed that no one was inside the home when the fire broke out.
The absence of occupants meant that crews could focus primarily on controlling the fire and preventing further structural damage.
Firefighters Open Walls and Other Areas
To prevent the fire from spreading further, firefighters opened several sections of the home’s interior and exterior.
Crews broke through various areas of the structure to access concealed spaces where flames, heat or burning materials could potentially remain hidden.
These measures were necessary to ensure that the fire had not spread into areas that could not be seen from the main fire zone.
Fire Brought Under Control
After sustained firefighting efforts, the blaze was brought under control at approximately 1:54 p.m.
Crews then carried out additional checks of the affected structure to identify any remaining hot spots, hidden flames or areas where the fire could potentially reignite.
No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Because no one was inside the home when the fire started, firefighters were able to concentrate their efforts on extinguishing the blaze, searching the property and preventing further damage.
Significant Damage to Garage and Home
The attached two-car garage sustained significant damage in the fire. Because the flames also reached the interior of the residence, parts of the home were damaged as well.
Firefighters opened different sections of the structure to assess how far the fire and heat had travelled and to ensure that no concealed fire remained.
Investigation Underway
Ottawa Fire Services has assigned an investigator to determine where and how the fire started.
Officials have not yet released a final cause of the blaze.
Investigators are expected to examine the available evidence to establish the point of origin and determine what caused the fire to spread so quickly from the garage into the home.

It remains unclear exactly where inside the garage the fire began or what triggered it.
