URDU WORLD CANADA (Web News) — A fast-spreading wildfire in British Columbia has caused widespread destruction in and around Summerland, forcing thousands of residents across the Okanagan Valley to remain away from their homes.
Officials say the Bald Range wildfire has now grown to more than 156 square kilometres, with several structures destroyed as firefighters continue efforts to contain the blaze.
Across British Columbia, approximately 21,400 people are under evacuation orders, while another 11,000 residents have been placed on evacuation alert and are being told to remain prepared to leave if conditions worsen.
Authorities have not yet provided a firm timeline for the return of evacuated residents.
Return Date Remains Uncertain
Summerland Chief Administrative Officer Graham Statt said officials are developing a plan to eventually bring residents back, but it is still too early to determine when that will happen.
Authorities must first gain access to affected areas, assess damage and determine whether roads, utilities and properties are safe before residents can return.
Officials have emphasized that public safety will remain the primary consideration throughout the process.
Critical Infrastructure Remains Protected
Some key infrastructure facilities have been given limited access as authorities work to protect essential services.
These include telecommunications facilities and infrastructure connected to the local water supply.
However, a fire burning near a landfill has raised concerns about the nearby water treatment plant, adding another challenge for emergency crews and local authorities.
More Firefighters Arrive to Battle the Blaze
Additional firefighting resources are arriving in the region as crews continue to battle the wildfire.
Officials said 100 firefighters from Mexico joined the firefighting operation on Tuesday.
The Canadian Armed Forces have also been placed on standby and could provide assistance if additional resources are required.
The arrival of additional personnel is expected to strengthen efforts to contain the fire and protect communities and critical infrastructure.
Community Support Praised
The mayors of Summerland and Penticton have praised residents for supporting one another during the evacuation.

RCMP Investigating Cause of Fire
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has launched an investigation into the cause of the Bald Range wildfire.
Penticton police are asking members of the public to come forward if they witnessed suspicious activity, people or vehicles in the area before or around the time the fire began on Friday.
Investigators are examining information that could help determine how the wildfire started.
Police Warn Against Speculation
Police have urged the public to avoid speculation about the cause of the fire while the investigation remains underway.
Authorities said the cause has not yet been established and warned that drawing conclusions before investigators complete their work could lead to misinformation.

Police are also enforcing evacuation restrictions in affected areas.
According to authorities, one person attempted to cross a roadblock established within an evacuation zone and was subsequently fined.

Off-Road Vehicle Restrictions Imposed
British Columbia’s Forest Minister has also introduced restrictions on the use of off-road vehicles in certain areas of the province.
The measure is aimed at reducing the risk of additional wildfires during a period of extremely dry conditions and heightened fire danger.
Officials say limiting activities that could potentially trigger new fires is an important part of the province’s broader wildfire prevention strategy.
Thousands Still Waiting to Return Home
Thousands of Summerland residents remain displaced as emergency crews continue fighting the fire and authorities assess damage.

The historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway has also escaped major damage from the wildfire.
The train was moved to a safer location as a precaution, while officials said both the railway’s trestle and the train remain safe.
The preservation of the historic railway is significant for the region, where the attraction plays an important role in the area’s tourism and heritage.
