I Have No Immediate Plans To Restore Municipal Funding, Mark Carney

The True Post(Web News) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that his government has no plans for any immediate changes to the municipal funding system.  He made this statement at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference in Ottawa on May 30, 2025.

Carney explained that the federal government is currently focused on major national projects, including commercial infrastructure such as housing, ports and energy corridors.  He said that changing municipal funding models is a broad process that requires detailed consultation with the provinces, and that this process is not possible immediately.

He added that while current funding models should not be “unpredictable and uncertain,” changing them requires a joint and serious conversation with the provinces.  Carney stressed that his government will continue to collaborate with municipalities, particularly to finance specific projects, as has been the case in recent years.

Rebecca Bligh, president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, called current funding models “the horse-drawn carriage era” and stressed the need for reform.  She said municipalities should be given more autonomy over their financial resources so they can plan for the long term.

Carney also highlighted that there are career opportunities for young people in housing and energy projects, and that these projects can strengthen the country’s economy for the next twenty-five years.
