The True Post (Web News) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have agreed to deepen bilateral relations in light of the uncertainties of Donald Trump’s second presidency in the United States.
The two leaders spoke at a joint press conference at Mexico City’s historic National Palace on Thursday evening. Carney said the new “comprehensive strategic partnership” between Canada and Mexico would bring the two countries closer together on trade, security, environmental initiatives and infrastructure. “Today we are beginning a new era of cooperation. Our economies are undergoing profound changes, and these changes will be strengthened by working together,” he said. President Sheinbaum said Canada and Mexico would meet every challenge based on respect and cooperation. “Mexico and Canada will move forward together, convinced that cooperation is the solution to every problem,” he said. The partnership comes as Canada is set to submit the United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) for review next year. Canada will announce the start of formal consultations next week, while the United States has already begun its process.
While some Canadian leaders have suggested a direct bilateral deal with the United States, Carney made it clear that Canada would “certainly” move forward with both Mexico and the United States.
Carney added that a major trade deal with the United States is “not on the table” at the moment, but talks are underway on smaller sectoral agreements to ease trade tensions. During his trip to Mexico, Prime Minister Carney also announced $9.9 million in funding for the United Nations-led “Migrant Integration Programs,” which aim to tackle the production and trafficking of drugs, especially fentanyl, and to address the problems of migrants.
