Canada Hopes for Trade Talks as Trump Raises Tariff Pressure

The True Post (Web News)Dominic LeBlanc says he expects Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump to speak “in the coming days” as trade tensions between the two countries escalate.

Appearing on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday, Canada’s Minister of Trade said that although Canada is “disappointed” by Trump’s new 35% tariff, efforts are ongoing to reach a deal that could lift trade restrictions between the two countries.

LeBlanc revealed he was in Washington last week, aiming to find a joint solution with the Trump administration ahead of Friday’s deadline to finalize a new trade agreement.

While Mexico was granted a 90-day grace period, Canada was immediately hit with a 35% tariff on goods that fall outside the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. In addition, Canadian steel, aluminum, automobiles, and semi-finished copper products remain subject to U.S. tariffs of up to 50%.
