Massive Earthquake Near Kamchatka Triggers Widespread Tsunami Warnings

The True Post (Web News)A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 struck near Russia’s eastern Kamchatka region, causing panic and triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific. The tremor resulted in 3 to 4-meter-high waves, damaging ports and buildings and injuring several people.

Due to the risk of further waves, tsunami advisories were issued throughout the Pacific, including in Japan and the Philippines, where emergency alerts were activated. Thousands of residents were evacuated from coastal areas to safer zones as a precautionary measure.

Reports confirmed the Fukushima nuclear plant was evacuated amid the rising threat. Tsunami alerts were also extended to parts of the United States, including California, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, Chile, and Oregon. In Japan’s eastern regions, railway services were suspended, and tsunami waves were reported in Hokkaido.

Earlier, on July 20, Russia had experienced earthquakes measuring 5.0 and 6.7, which didn’t trigger tsunami warnings. However, a 7.4-magnitude quake followed at 08:49 GMT, prompting the US Geological Survey to warn of potentially dangerous waves.

Forecasts indicated that waves between 30 cm to 1 meter could strike Russian coastlines, while waves less than 30 cm were expected in Japan and Hawaii. The epicenter was located approximately 150 kilometers east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, beneath the Pacific Ocean.
