A major sports and recreation development in northeast Calgary is moving forward, with the proposed Northeast Athletic Complex expected to provide modern facilities for athletes, families and community organisations.

The Pakistan Canada Association (PCA) Calgary has welcomed progress on the project, praising Mayor Jeromy Farkas, Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal and the City of Calgary administration for supporting investment in recreational facilities.

PCA President Azhar Hanjra described the development as an important milestone for the growing communities of northeast Calgary. He said investment in sports and recreational infrastructure would give young people more opportunities to develop their abilities while providing families with additional spaces for healthy activities.

The association also congratulated the mayor, councillor and other members of the city administration involved in advancing the project.

Modern Sports Facilities Planned for Northeast Calgary

The Northeast Athletic Complex is planned for a site of approximately 35 acres in northeast Calgary. The development is expected to include more than 162,000 square feet of indoor facilities, alongside a range of outdoor sports and recreational amenities.

The proposed facilities include:

  • A dedicated cricket ground.
  • Four outdoor multi-purpose artificial turf fields.
  • An indoor fieldhouse designed for year-round sports activities.
  • Cricket batting nets and player facilities.
  • Spectator seating and parking for more than 550 vehicles.
  • Green spaces, walking paths, picnic areas and children’s play areas.

The project is intended to serve a wide range of sporting activities and provide a shared recreational space for residents across the area.

The City of Calgary’s planning documents describe the development as a phased project, with outdoor fields planned as the first phase and the indoor fieldhouse dependent on funding.

Cricket Facilities Welcome News for South Asian Community

One of the most significant features of the proposed complex is its dedicated cricket ground.

Cricket has a strong following among Pakistani, South Asian and other communities in Calgary. Access to purpose-built facilities could provide local players with better opportunities to train, compete and develop their skills.

The planned cricket facilities are also expected to support community tournaments and sporting events, giving young players a chance to participate in organised activities.

For many families in northeast Calgary, the development represents an opportunity to see a sport that is popular in their communities receive greater recognition and investment.

PCA Leadership Praises City Officials

PCA President Azhar Hanjra said that meaningful urban development requires authorities to consider the needs of residents across all parts of the city.

He noted that northeast Calgary is a growing area where modern sports and recreation facilities are increasingly important.

Hanjra said the complex could contribute not only to the promotion of sports but also to stronger relationships among different cultural communities.

PCA Vice President Hassan Nawab, General Secretary Noman Mushtaq and other association representatives also expressed their appreciation to Mayor Jeromy Farkas, Councillor Raj Dhaliwal and the city officials involved in the project.

The association said it hoped the development would become a lasting community asset for future generations.

Mayor and Councillor Recognise the Importance of Recreation

The project reflects the city’s efforts to respond to growing demand for sports facilities and recreational spaces.

Investment in outdoor fields and indoor sports infrastructure can help provide more opportunities for residents to remain active, participate in organised sports and connect with their communities.

Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal has been among the city representatives associated with advancing the Northeast Athletic Complex project.

The development is expected to benefit not only northeast Calgary but also residents and sporting organisations from other parts of the city.

A Long-Term Investment in Calgary’s Communities

The Pakistan Canada Association, which has been active in representing and supporting Calgary’s Pakistani community for decades, welcomed the development as a positive step towards improving local facilities and creating opportunities for young people.

The association expressed hope that the project would serve residents for many years and encourage greater participation in sports and community activities.

PCA also reaffirmed its support for initiatives that promote youth development, community wellbeing and the overall growth of Calgary.

The Northeast Athletic Complex is expected to become an important recreational destination, bringing together athletes, families and different communities through sports and shared public spaces.
