The True Post (Web News) Former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Nobel Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei has…
Expressing serious concern over the military threats against Iran, he likened them to the dangerous atmosphere before the Iraq war. Mohamed ElBaradei says that the way in which attacks on Iran are being talked about is reminiscent of the campaign launched against Iraq in 2003, which later resulted in an immoral and illegal war. According to him, even then, world public opinion was mentally prepared for war by instilling fear of dangers, which later proved to be wrong.
In his statement, the former IAEA chief made it clear that there is currently no clear, immediate or present threat from Iran that would justify unilateral military action. He said that despite this, threats to target Iran are a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter.
Mohamed ElBaradei lamented that it seemed that the cost of human lives and the potential destruction of an entire region were not being taken seriously. According to him, the world had learned no lessons from conflicts like Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya and seemed poised to repeat the same mistakes.
The statements come as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said in the past few days that the US fleet is rapidly moving towards Iran. These statements have further increased the already existing tension in the Middle East and raised fears of a new war on a global scale. According to political analysts, the effects of any military action against Iran will not be limited to just one country, but the entire region could be engulfed, which could seriously threaten the global economy, energy supply and international peace. Mohamed ElBaradei has urged world powers to adopt the path of diplomacy, negotiations and international law instead of threats and the use of force, so that the world can avoid another long and destructive war.
