Ottawa: US President Donald Trump has warned that Canada could face additional tariffs if it fails to improve the management of its forests, claiming that wildfire smoke drifting into the United States is causing significant environmental and economic damage.

In a statement shared on social media, Trump criticized Canada’s handling of its forests and brushlands, saying smoke from wildfires in Ontario and other parts of the country has repeatedly spread across the US border, affecting air quality in several northern American states.

Trump Says Wildfire Smoke Is Costing the US Billions

Trump argued that poor forest management has become a recurring issue and claimed the resulting smoke has cost the United States billions of dollars in health, environmental, and economic impacts.

He said he intends to discuss the issue with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to better understand what steps Canada is taking to reduce the risk of future wildfires.

The US president also suggested that the financial impact of cross-border air pollution should be considered when determining existing or future tariffs on Canadian imports.

Canada Rejects Trump’s Criticism

Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed Trump’s remarks, saying climate change is a global challenge that requires international cooperation rather than political blame.

Speaking to reporters in London, Ontario, Carney said Canada continues to invest heavily in clean energy and climate resilience, while accusing the United States of opposing several clean energy initiatives.

He stressed that extreme wildfire seasons are being intensified by changing climate conditions and cannot be solved through tariffs or trade measures alone.

Legal Questions Over New Tariffs

It remains unclear whether Trump has the legal authority to impose additional tariffs over wildfire smoke.

Legal experts note that earlier this year, the US Supreme Court limited some of the emergency powers previously used by the administration to justify trade actions.

Canada is currently subject to a 10 percent US tariff under provisions of the Trade Act of 1974. Those measures are scheduled to expire later this month unless the US Congress approves an extension.

Republican Lawmakers Call for Tougher Action

Trump’s comments come as several Republican lawmakers have also called for stronger action against Canada over the impact of wildfire smoke.

Congressman John James described his remarks as a “final warning,” urging Canada to improve forest management to prevent smoke from affecting American communities each summer.

Meanwhile, Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno announced plans to introduce legislation next week that would impose sanctions on Canadian officials deemed responsible for wildfire management failures.

The proposed bill would reportedly include visa restrictions, asset freezes, and the creation of a compensation fund for Americans affected by wildfire smoke, financed through additional tariffs on Canadian goods.

Ontario Premier Urges Cooperation Instead of Criticism

Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected the criticism from US politicians, arguing that both countries should work together to tackle increasingly severe wildfire seasons.

Ford said the United States should send additional firefighting crews and emergency assistance instead of assigning blame, noting that Canada has repeatedly provided support during major wildfire emergencies in the United States.

According to provincial officials, nearly 200 wildfires are currently burning across Ontario, with almost half of them still not under control.

Growing Cross-Border Tensions

The latest exchange highlights rising tensions between Washington and Ottawa over environmental issues, trade policy, and climate-related disasters.

While the United States has raised concerns over the impact of wildfire smoke on public health and air quality, Canadian officials maintain that addressing climate change requires joint international action rather than unilateral economic penalties.
