According to US officials, the latest measures aim to restrict networks involved in the procurement and transfer of military equipment and weapons for Iran while increasing financial and commercial pressure on organisations associated with these activities.
Three Entities Targeted by Sanctions
According to the US Department of the Treasury, the new sanctions target Iran’s Saha Airlines, Russian aircraft manufacturer Yakovlev and Russian shipping company MG-FLOT.
US officials say all three entities have played roles in activities connected to Iran’s military programme or the transfer of weapons and military equipment through various means. As a result, they have been added to the sanctions list.
Allegations Against Yakovlev
According to US officials, Russian aircraft manufacturer Yakovlev supplied Iran with Yak-130 advanced jet trainers and related equipment.
The Yak-130 is an advanced training aircraft used to prepare pilots for operating modern combat aircraft. Under the latest US measures, the company has been identified as an entity that has assisted Iran in obtaining military equipment.
Washington maintains that any assistance contributing to Iran’s military capabilities could strengthen the networks through which the country obtains weapons and defence equipment. The United States is therefore imposing financial restrictions on entities allegedly involved in these activities.
Russian Shipping Company Also Targeted
The new sanctions also include Russian shipping company MG-FLOT.
According to the US Department of the Treasury, vessels managed by the company have been involved in transferring ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia.
US officials say the movement of military equipment by sea is an important aspect of defence cooperation between Iran and Russia. As a result, transportation-related entities are also facing sanctions intended to restrict these activities.
Action Against Saha Airlines
Iranian airline Saha Airlines has also been targeted by the US sanctions.
