The True Post(Web News)Canada Post has launched major changes to its nationwide mail delivery system, planning to phase out direct door-to-door delivery for millions of households and replace it with community mailboxes, while also considering the closure of some post offices.
According to an official statement, around four million addresses will be shifted to community mailboxes over the next five years. The transition will be implemented gradually, with changes introduced in phases across different regions each year.
The consultation process is set to begin in 13 cities and communities, including Ottawa and Winnipeg. In the initial phase, approximately 136,000 addresses are expected to be converted to community mailbox delivery by late 2026 and early 2027.
Officials noted that three out of four addresses in Canada already receive mail through centralized systems. However, fully ending door-to-door delivery will take several months in each affected area. Canada Post plans to work closely with local communities to determine suitable locations for the new mailboxes and will keep residents, businesses, and employees informed throughout the process.
The organization also revealed it is reviewing its retail network, which may lead to the closure of certain post offices in urban and suburban areas. This decision comes as customer usage of physical post offices continues to decline. Since 2021, retail revenue has reportedly dropped by around 30 percent.
Last year, the federal government lifted a decades-old moratorium on closing rural post offices, raising concerns about access to mail services in remote regions where private courier options are limited.
Authorities stated that each area will be carefully assessed to determine where changes are necessary and where services must be maintained. The goal is to balance cost reductions with the continued provision of essential services to the public.
These reforms are part of a broader effort announced by the federal government to stabilize Canada Post financially, with a focus on significantly reducing annual operating costs.
