Wildfires Rage Out of Control in British Columbia as Province Declares State of Emergency, 22,000 Evacuated

British Columbia has declared a state of emergency as rapidly spreading wildfires fueled by extreme heat, dry conditions and strong winds have created a dangerous situation across the province. Dozens of wildfires are burning in different areas, while thousands of residents have been ordered to evacuate to safer locations.

Entire Province Under State of Emergency

British Columbia Premier David Eby said the wildfire situation across the province is extremely serious and that all available resources are being used to fight the fires.

He urged residents under evacuation orders to leave their homes immediately and follow instructions from emergency authorities. According to Eby, the fires are spreading extremely quickly, and even a short delay in evacuation could prove dangerous.

Summerland Evacuated

The seriousness of the situation became clear when authorities ordered nearly all of the approximately 12,000 residents of Summerland to leave their homes.

The Bald Range wildfire moved rapidly toward populated areas, prompting authorities to order a large-scale evacuation late at night.

Across British Columbia, approximately 22,000 people are currently under evacuation orders, while another 9,700 residents have been told to be prepared to leave their areas at any time.

Bald Range Fire Spreads Rapidly

The Bald Range wildfire was first detected at around 5:30 p.m. Friday, but within only a few hours it had developed into a major threat.

Reports indicate that the fire spread across approximately 50 square kilometres within just three hours. Its size nearly doubled overnight, and by Sunday afternoon, the wildfire had grown to more than 103 square kilometres.

Firefighters are facing major challenges because of the unusually rapid spread and intensity of the blaze.

105 Wildfires Active Across British Columbia

There are currently 105 active wildfires across British Columbia, with 70 of them having started during the past week.

Hot and dry weather has made the situation even more difficult, while some fires are spreading rapidly into new areas.

Firefighting teams are continuing operations on multiple fronts while authorities are also focusing on moving residents in threatened communities to safe locations.

Peachland Also Affected

The Bald Range wildfire has also prompted evacuation orders and alerts in parts of Peachland.

Mayor Patrick Van Minsel said no buildings had been reported destroyed in the area so far, but described the behaviour of the fire as unusual.

Approximately 20 percent of Peachland residents have been placed under evacuation orders. Police also went door to door during the morning hours to instruct residents to move to safer locations.

Possible Death Under Investigation

Authorities are also investigating a possible death linked to the wildfire near Summerland.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said a resident of Meadow Valley had reported a possible death. Police and the British Columbia Coroners Service are working to verify the report, although dangerous conditions in the affected area are making the investigation difficult.

Authorities have confirmed that they remain in contact with the affected family.

Thousands Staying at Emergency Centres

Temporary accommodation and emergency support centres have been established in West Kelowna for people forced to evacuate.

Many evacuees spent the night on cots at a sports arena, where they were provided with food and other essential supplies.

The Central Okanagan Food Bank and Okanagan Central Salvation Army volunteers have been providing hot meals and food packages to evacuees. Volunteers reportedly prepared more than 300 food boxes containing fruit, yogurt, snacks and other ready-to-eat items.

Agricultural Workers Also Evacuated

The wildfires have also affected workers in important agricultural areas of the Okanagan.

Approximately 40 migrant agricultural workers were transported by bus from a cherry farm to a safer location.

The workers were taken to the Royal LePage Arena in West Kelowna, where temporary accommodation and assistance have been provided alongside support for other evacuees.

Some of the affected workers said the situation became extremely frightening when the fire suddenly moved closer to their location.

Restrictions on Okanagan Lake

Authorities have also asked boat owners on Okanagan Lake to exercise caution so that firefighting aircraft can safely collect water.

Officials said boats on the lake have sometimes made it difficult for firefighting aircraft to access water.

Residents have been urged not to interfere with emergency operations and to stay away from dangerous areas.

Residents Urged to Evacuate Immediately

Premier David Eby has again urged anyone under an evacuation order not to remain at home.

He warned that the fires are moving at an unusually fast pace and that conditions could change significantly within only a few hours.

Authorities are asking residents to follow official instructions, remain prepared for evacuation and give firefighters and emergency crews clear access to affected areas.

The wildfire crisis in British Columbia has once again highlighted the growing threat posed by wildfires during the summer season and the challenges facing communities as extreme heat, dry conditions and strong winds fuel rapidly spreading fires.
