The advance voting process is intended to provide an alternative for people who may be unable to visit a polling station on the scheduled election day, October 26.
Four Days of Advance Voting
Advance voting in Ottawa will run from October 1 to October 4. Residents will be able to cast their ballots on all four days between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
According to the election administration, voters can choose any of the designated advance voting locations, regardless of their ward or residential address.
Voting Available at 10 Locations
Ten locations across Ottawa have been designated for advance voting. These include the Cardelrec Recreation Complex Goulbourn, Churchill Seniors Recreation Centre, City Hall, François Dupuis Recreation Centre, Greely Community Centre and Diane Deans Greenboro Community Centre.
Residents will also be able to vote at the Minto Recreation Complex Barrhaven, Nepean Sportsplex, Richcraft Recreation Complex Kanata and St-Laurent Complex.
Voter Information Cards Not Mandatory
According to election officials, bringing a voter information card is helpful but not mandatory. Residents who have received a voter information letter may bring it with them to their polling location.
However, voters who do not have a voter information card can still cast their ballots, provided they present the required identification.
Identification Documents Required
Ottawa residents must present identification showing their name and current address to vote. This allows eligible voters to exercise their voting rights even if they do not have a voter information card.
Arrangements have also been made for people whose names do not appear on the voters’ list. Similarly, voters whose addresses have changed can have their information corrected at the polling location.
Another Opportunity on October 16
Following the four-day advance voting period from October 1 to October 4, residents will have another opportunity to vote early on October 16. The regular election day will follow on October 26.
This arrangement gives residents multiple dates on which they can cast their ballots, making it easier for them to participate in the electoral process.
Two Candidates Re-Elected Unopposed
Two incumbent councillors in Ottawa’s 2026 municipal election have already been re-elected unopposed.
Riley Brockington in Ward 16, River, and David Brown in Ward 21, Rideau-Jock, faced no opposing candidates when the nomination period closed.
As a result, both councillors have been declared re-elected, and voting will not be required for these two seats.
A Total of 181 Candidates in the Race
A total of 181 candidate nominations were confirmed for the municipal elections, while some candidates were elected unopposed. Residents in Ottawa’s various wards will have the opportunity to vote for their local representatives.
In addition to electing a mayor, voters will choose councillors for different wards. These elected representatives play an important role in decisions concerning local affairs, development projects and municipal services.
Growing Public Interest in Local Politics
Political observer Bridget Pellerin has expressed surprise at the increased engagement between residents and candidates during Ottawa’s municipal election campaign.
According to Pellerin, residents appear more interested than before in speaking directly with candidates and learning about their positions. She noted that this type of public discussion had become less common in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, but the trend now appears to be gaining momentum again.
Renewed Activity in Local Politics
Pellerin believes that direct communication between candidates and residents could influence local political engagement in the future.
In her view, increased discussion among neighbours and within communities could encourage more people to participate in future elections and consider running for public office themselves.
