A Vancouver police officer with 26 years of service is facing serious criminal charges after authorities alleged that at least 19 people were defrauded of nearly $3 million.
The officer, Call Dosanjh, has been charged with multiple offences, including fraud, theft and breach of trust. Police said the investigation is ongoing and that the number of victims and the total financial loss could increase as investigators examine additional evidence and transactions.
26 Years With Vancouver Police
According to police, Dosanjh has served with the Vancouver Police Department for 26 years and has been regarded as a prominent member of the department.
He is also the chief executive officer of Kids Play Youth Foundation, an organization involved in activities aimed at supporting children and young people.
His arrest has drawn additional attention because of his dual role as a long-serving police officer and a prominent figure in youth and community activities.
Arrest on Thursday
Vancouver police said Dosanjh was arrested on Thursday following an investigation into alleged financial wrongdoing.
Investigators believe at least 19 people were victims of an alleged fraud scheme, with approximately $3 million obtained from those affected.
Police said the investigation remains active and that further details could emerge as investigators review financial records, statements from alleged victims and other evidence.
Nine Charges Laid
Dosanjh is facing a total of nine charges related to alleged incidents dating back to 2017.
The charges include four counts of fraud over $5,000, four counts of theft over $5,000 and one count related to breach of trust.
The alleged financial misconduct is said to have occurred over several years, requiring investigators to examine a range of transactions and circumstances surrounding the complaints.
Police Chief Details Case
Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai discussed the arrest and charges during a news conference on Friday.
Rai said Dosanjh has been suspended from the Vancouver Police Department.
The police chief also said he had recommended to the Vancouver Police Board that the suspension be without pay.
Police departments can pursue internal disciplinary measures alongside criminal proceedings when serious allegations are made against an officer.
