Bollywood actress Nora Fatehi is facing legal action over comments she made on social media about a chartered aircraft, with an aviation company filing a Rs300 million defamation and damages claim against the Moroccan-Canadian actress.
The case is scheduled to be heard by a court in Gandhinagar on September 25.
The aviation company has asked the court to take legal action against Fatehi and order the removal of allegedly defamatory material related to the aircraft that remains available on social media platforms.
Journey from Mumbai to Jaipur
According to the company, the dispute dates back to December last year, when Nora Fatehi travelled on a chartered flight from Mumbai to Jaipur.
During the journey, Fatehi recorded videos inside the aircraft and later shared them on her Instagram account.
The company claims that while posting the videos, Fatehi described the aircraft as being like a small toy and compared it to a “Lego airplane”. Her comments and the videos subsequently circulated widely on social media.
Why Did the Company Object?
The aviation company has argued before the court that Fatehi’s comments were irresponsible and careless.
According to the claim, the actress’s comments about the aircraft did not correspond with its technical specifications or its actual condition.
The company further argued that comments made by a prominent public figure about a commercial company or its services can reach a far larger audience than similar comments made by an ordinary customer, potentially causing significant commercial consequences.
Reference to Millions of Followers
The company has also highlighted Fatehi’s large social media following in its legal claim.
According to the application, the actress has more than 46 million followers on Instagram, meaning that the videos and comments she shared were capable of reaching a substantial audience.
The company alleges that the widespread circulation of the material damaged its business reputation and created a negative impression among potential customers regarding the quality of its services and aircraft.
Claim of Decline in Bookings
The aviation company has told the court that it allegedly suffered financial losses following Fatehi’s comments.
According to the company, flight bookings declined by between 15 and 20 per cent, while the number of cancellations also increased.
The company has linked these alleged losses to the actress’s social media comments and is seeking Rs300 million in damages.
However, the legal validity of the claim and the actual extent of any financial loss will ultimately have to be determined by the court based on evidence and arguments presented by both sides.
Company Says Aircraft Was Fully Safe
The company has also defended the aircraft that was the subject of Fatehi’s comments.
According to its court filing, the chartered aircraft was fully fit and safe for passenger travel.
The company said the aircraft had been properly certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and was being operated in accordance with the required National Safety Operating Procedures (NSOPs).
Through this argument, the company has rejected any impression that the aircraft was operating in an unsafe or substandard condition.
Request to Remove Videos
In addition to seeking Rs300 million in damages, the aviation company has asked the court for further relief.
The company wants Fatehi to be ordered to remove all allegedly defamatory videos and other material concerning the aircraft from social media platforms.
It has also requested that the actress be directed to issue a public clarification to address the alleged damage caused to the company’s reputation.
Case to Be Considered by Court
The matter is now before the court, with the next hearing scheduled for September 25. The proceedings are expected to examine the positions of both parties, the available evidence and their respective legal arguments.
The case also highlights the potential consequences of comments made by high-profile personalities on social media, where even brief remarks can trigger major commercial disputes.
Because of Fatehi’s millions of followers, the aviation company has characterised her comments as more than a personal opinion, arguing that they had a direct impact on its business and reputation.
However, the allegations have yet to be established in court. The final decision regarding damages, defamation and the removal of social media content will depend on the court’s assessment of the evidence and arguments presented by both sides.
