A U.S. television news anchor briefly fell asleep during a live broadcast, leaving viewers surprised when the camera continued rolling. However, after the reason behind the incident became known, many social media users responded with sympathy rather than criticism.
Dominique Dillon, a television anchor from Memphis, Tennessee, hosts the morning program “Good Morning Memphis.” During the July 29 broadcast, Dillon was sitting in front of the camera when she briefly closed her eyes and appeared to fall asleep for a few seconds.
News Anchor Falls Asleep During Live Broadcast
During the program, Dillon was seated at the news desk and appeared to be looking at a tablet in front of her. At one point, she briefly drifted off to sleep while the broadcast was still live.
Dillon reportedly did not immediately realize that she had fallen asleep on air. When she opened her eyes, the camera had already moved to another shot.
Later, she recalled the incident and said she felt extremely embarrassed when she realized what had happened. She described the moment as feeling like she had suddenly woken up from a strange dream.
Studio Staff Did Not Immediately Notice
One unusual aspect of the incident was that members of the production team initially did not realize that Dillon had fallen asleep.
The producers reportedly believed that she was simply looking down at the tablet in front of her. As a result, her brief nap was not immediately noticed during the live broadcast.
The video later appeared on social media, where viewers began sharing their reactions to the unexpected moment.
The News Anchor Is a Mother of Two
The reason behind Dillon’s brief sleep quickly changed the way people viewed the incident.
It was revealed that Dillon is the mother of two young children and had spent much of the previous night taking care of them. Her older daughter is two years old, while her younger daughter is just eight months old.
The night before the broadcast, Dillon’s husband was working a double shift, leaving her responsible for caring for the children.
Baby’s Teething Kept Her Awake
According to Dillon, she began trying to put her children to bed at around 8 p.m. However, her eight-month-old daughter was experiencing discomfort from teething and struggled to fall asleep.
After several hours of trying to settle the baby, the child eventually fell asleep between approximately 10:30 and 11 p.m. This left Dillon with very little time to rest before she had to prepare for her early-morning work schedule.
Dillon explained that her daily routine is already extremely demanding. She normally gets up at around 1:30 a.m. to prepare for her early shift.
The combination of a demanding work schedule and a night of very little sleep apparently caught up with her during the live broadcast.
Video Goes Viral on Social Media
The unexpected moment quickly spread across social media.
While some viewers initially found the incident surprising, the public reaction changed after details about Dillon’s difficult night became known.
Instead of criticizing her, many social media users expressed sympathy and praised her efforts to balance her professional responsibilities with caring for her young children.
Several people also pointed out the challenges faced by working mothers who have to manage demanding jobs while raising young children.
Fox 13 Supports the Anchor
Dillon’s employer, Fox 13, also showed support for the anchor and referred to the incident in a lighthearted way as a “power nap.”
The station used the incident to highlight the challenges faced by new mothers, particularly women who are simultaneously dealing with demanding professional responsibilities and the needs of young children.
What initially appeared to be an embarrassing moment on live television ultimately became a relatable story about exhaustion, parenting and the challenges faced by working mothers.
Dillon’s brief sleep on live television may have been an unexpected moment, but the reaction to the incident highlighted a broader issue: the difficulty of balancing demanding work schedules with the responsibilities of caring for young children.
