Success in the film industry is often shaped not only by talent and luck but also by making the right decision at the right time.

Bollywood has witnessed several instances in which one actor’s departure from a project opened the door for another performer, with the replacement eventually turning the role into a memorable part of their career. The 2004 film Swades is one such example.

The lead role in Swades was initially conceived with Aamir Khan in mind, but after he stepped away from the project, the role eventually went to Shah Rukh Khan.

In a recent interview, the film’s co-writer Amin Hajee revealed interesting details about the casting process and how Shah Rukh Khan ultimately became part of the project.

Aamir Khan Was Also Expected to Produce the Film

According to Amin Hajee, Aamir Khan was initially expected not only to play the lead role but also to produce the film through his production house.

The project was originally titled Desh, and director Ashutosh Gowariker had initially developed the screenplay with Aamir Khan in mind.

However, Aamir wanted certain changes to be made to the script, which required further work. At the time, he was also heavily occupied with other professional commitments and could not devote the necessary time to the screenplay.

Eventually, Aamir decided to withdraw from the project.

What appeared to be a routine professional decision later became one of Bollywood’s more interesting casting stories.

Hrithik Roshan Was Also Considered

After Aamir Khan’s departure, Gowariker began considering other actors for the lead role.

Hrithik Roshan was among the actors who were approached and shown the screenplay. R Madhavan, who later became widely known for his role as Farhan in 3 Idiots, also auditioned for the part.

However, the final decision regarding the character of Mohan Bhargava had not yet been made when Shah Rukh Khan entered the picture and changed the direction of the project.

How Shah Rukh Khan Joined Swades

Amin Hajee said that he and Ashutosh Gowariker first met Shah Rukh Khan at a special screening of Lagaan.

After watching the film, Shah Rukh reportedly expressed his desire to work in Gowariker’s next project.

According to the account, Shah Rukh made it clear that he wanted to be part of the director’s next film and was interested in playing Mohan Bhargava in Desh.

He subsequently contacted Gowariker, underwent a screen test and was eventually selected for the lead role.

Mohan Bhargava Became a Memorable Character

The role initially envisioned for Aamir Khan ultimately became one of the significant films in Shah Rukh Khan’s career.

Released in 2004, Swades featured Shah Rukh as Mohan Bhargava, a scientist associated with NASA who returns to his native India and encounters the realities and challenges faced by people living in rural communities.

The film addressed issues including rural development, electricity, water shortages, poverty, social inequality and education, while placing these themes within a broader story about patriotism and reconnecting with one’s homeland.

Although Swades was not one of Shah Rukh Khan’s biggest commercial blockbusters in the conventional sense, the film gradually developed a strong reputation.

Over the years, it came to be regarded as one of the more meaningful and distinctive films of Shah Rukh’s career.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Interesting Remark About Aamir Khan

Amin Hajee also recalled an interesting remark attributed to Shah Rukh Khan.

According to Hajee, Shah Rukh had said that whenever Aamir Khan walked away from a film, he would be willing to take it on without even reading the script because, in his view, if Aamir had been interested in a project, there had to be something special about it.

The remark offers an interesting glimpse into the friendly professional rivalry that has long existed among Bollywood’s leading stars.

Another Opportunity After Lagaan

Ashutosh Gowariker and Aamir Khan had previously achieved major success with Lagaan.

The film received widespread acclaim in India and internationally and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Given the success of their collaboration, Aamir’s involvement in Gowariker’s next project had initially been expected.

However, his professional commitments and the need for further changes to the screenplay eventually led to his departure.

His decision ultimately created an opportunity for Shah Rukh Khan to take on a role that would become closely associated with his career.

The story behind Swades is therefore another example of how, in the film industry, one actor’s decision to leave a project can sometimes create the opportunity for another actor to deliver a memorable performance.
